Scope of Unit
This unit examines the representations of masculinity that exist in contemporary society. While our primary focus will be on advertisement, we will be looking at a variety of texts and what they suggest to us about the meaning of masculinity.

You should have a title and a definition explaining what it means to be a man
Tuesday Feb 2nd
What are the characteristics of a real man?
what characteristics might a man have that place outside the above definition?
How do we, as a society, treat such men?
How are some of these "unmanly" characteristics mis-leading?
How are men restricted by the definition of what they should be?
Identify the influences on our masculinity.
How does our sense of masculinity change and evolve?

Finishing the "Guy Love" activity
Homework: Plan your answer to the question on the bottom of the "Guy Love" sheet (How can the media be used positively to help build male character? Use the clips from Scrubs to support your answer)
You should have identified 4 techniques, given an example and written down the effect of that particular use of the technique.
For this answer, I am looking for the techniques that you would have learned in previous years. For a table containing terms you should already know, download the document at the bottom of today's lesson breakdown.
From next week, we are going to start learning some new techniques.

We spent some time working on our revision worksheets for techniques you have covered previously.
We also discussed modality, what it means and how to distinguish between high and low modality and how to take this into consideration when reading an advertisement text.
Tomorrow:

- Decoding some examples of modality.
Tuesday Feb 9th
We annotated an example of an advertisement which makes use of modality.
You should have answered the following questions:
a) What does the composer want us to believe? How do you know
b) Why would the composer want us to believe this?
c) List two pieces of factual information.
d) How does knowing about this layout technique change the way you read advertisements?
You should have copied down the 4 definitions into the imperative command box in your glossary.
H/W: Imperative command and modal adverbs page in your booklet.

Wednesday Feb 10th
The Given and New
A compositional technique which divides an image vertically into the given (assumed prior knowledge the responder already knows) on the left hand side of the page from the new information on the right hand side of the page.
When considering this technique, it is important to keep in mind the target audience of the advertisement as the assumed knowledge depends upon who this group is.

Complete deconstruction of Calvin Klein advertisement.
Use the sentence fragments provided to create a paragraph answering the question, "What is suggested about men and masculinity in the Calvin Klein advertisement?"

- Finish analysing Solo advertisment.
- Cultural assumptions about masculinity. If you are not in possession of an assessment task sheet you should ensure you photocopy one ASAP. DO NOT wait for the next English lesson when I am in class and expect an extension.

- Responding to representations of masculinity - writing letters to the editor.
- Don't forget that I am marking your planning sheet AND your letter.
Thursday March 4th
- Going through what you did while I was camping with year 7.
- Some time to work on your assessment task - planning time only.

- Mindmap of visuaL, film and language techniques you can use.
- Language of representation
- Writing about techniques.
Tuesday March 9th
- Time permitting: if we complete all the tasks listed for Monday. You will have today's lesson to work on your assessment task. May I recommend you bring your lap top so you can be working on your written work.
Wednesday March 10th
- Notes on the structure and language features of an exposition.
H/W: put the paragraphs of the exposition in order and glue into your English book.
Monday March 15th
- Labeling the features of an exposition.Paragraphs 1 and 2 should have been completed in class.
Paragraph 3 should be labeled for homework
Please ensure you have, at the very least, labelled the structural elements (topic sentence, evidence, link back to question).
Tuesday March 16th
- We will finish labeling our exposition and you will be set a writing task.
- Time permitting we will watch some of the advertisements.
